Transoft Solutions Inc., developers of industry-leading software solutions for the AEC design community, is pleased to announce the winner of their SIGMA Survey Contest. Tom Berning of Woolpert Inc, a design, engineering and geospatial firm located in Cincinnati, Ohio, was the proud recipient of an Apple® iPod touch® after a drawing was held. Mr. Berning was one of many clients who responded to the SIGMA survey. Transoft Solutions uses such surveys to increase communications with existing and potential users in the engineering and architectural community allowing their opinions to assist in guiding the development process in order to provide solutions that address the requirements of the industry. These factors are typically related to CAD platforms, required functionality, consideration for standards and customization, and to understand how companies have been adjusting technology-purchasing requirements as a result of the condition of the economy.

TORUS in BHI’s Design Toolbox Facilitates Efficient Roundabout Design

The difficulty with designing roundabouts is well known. Using conventional CAD programs to modify roundabout geometric changes, no matter how minor, can be a labor-intensive effort that can rapidly impact a project schedule. When Bohannan Huston, Inc., (BHI) began using Transoft Solutions’ TORUS software, however, we immediately recognized the software's ability to dramatically streamline roundabout design, analysis and production workflow. What had taken hours was reduced to minutes! It was immediately clear that the software’s strength is expediting roundabout design layout. This efficiency could thereby give our design engineers more time to address other project details and to interact with clients to meet their expectations.

Few motorists will appreciate the process that underpins the operational and safety benefits inherent in good roundabout design. High quality design promotes safer driving with improved traffic flow. It is a delicate balance between traffic capacity and physical geometry. This paper summarises the typical roundabout design process with regard to the inter- relationship between layout and traffic speed. Field research conducted in the development of a new dynamic and integrated approach is described with the work flow for one practical modern solutin.
