Apron Expansion: Navigating Operational and Stakeholder Priorities

AviPLAN

Apron expansion projects are vital for accommodating growing airport operations and ensuring seamless integration between aircraft parking and terminal functionality. An expansion effort at Wilmington Airport (ILM) highlights the intricacies of apron planning with AviPLAN and the challenges faced during such projects.

In this project, apron planning was a key focus, particularly in support of the airport’s concourse expansion. The work included developing apron layout concepts, preparing contract documents for apron markings, and managing the procurement of passenger boarding bridges. The study also involved creating phased aircraft parking plans to maintain operations during construction. These plans were integral in discussions with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to secure funding for additional apron space.

One of the biggest challenges in this project was balancing operational needs with limited apron space during construction. The airport required a specific number of active gates and remain overnight (RON) parking positions to ensure high service levels for passengers and airlines. Managing this within a restricted space while accommodating ongoing operations demanded careful planning and stakeholder collaboration.

Key lessons from this project emphasize the importance of clearly defining operating parameters, identifying current and future fleet mix requirements, and ensuring that ground servicing needs are considered in the planning process. Understanding the unique requirements of the airport operator and airlines is equally critical to creating effective apron layouts.

Gathering detailed data on existing site conditions, building elevations, and ground equipment is another essential step. This information forms the foundation for developing practical and efficient layouts that align with operational goals. Additionally, close coordination with stakeholders throughout the planning and design process helps to address potential challenges early and ensures that the final layout meets everyone’s needs.

Apron planning is a complex yet rewarding aspect of airport design, requiring a balance of technical expertise, foresight, and collaboration. By following these principles, airport professionals can develop solutions that support operational efficiency and prepare facilities for future growth.
