Transoft Solutions Partners with SWOV on Major Dutch Road Safety Study

Press Release

We’re excited to share that Transoft Solutions has been selected by SWOV, the Dutch Institute for Road Safety Research, to lead a groundbreaking study on roundabout safety across the Netherlands.

What We’ll Be Working On

Over the next two years, our team will be analyzing how different roundabout designs affect the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. This isn’t just about collecting data—it’s about understanding what makes vulnerable road users safer at one of the most common types of intersections in Dutch infrastructure.

The project covers at least 26 roundabouts throughout urban and rural areas in the Netherlands, with potential to expand to nearly 50 locations. Two cameras will be deployed at each site, recording for two weeks using advanced video technology, capturing every interaction between motorized traffic, bikes, and pedestrians.

Why This Matters

Roundabouts are everywhere in the Netherlands, and while they’re generally safer than traditional intersections, their design details make a huge difference for cyclists and pedestrians. Does it matter if cyclists have priority when crossing? How far should the bike path be from the roundabout itself? Should cyclists share the roundabout or have separate infrastructure? How do unidirectional cyclist crossings perform compared to bidirectional ones?

These are the questions SWOV wants to answer with hard data, and that’s where VERALYTIX comes to play.

We’ll be deploying multi-camera systems at each location to capture comprehensive video footage. From there, our analytics platform will measure critical safety metrics including traffic flow patterns, trajectories, speeds and speed differences, as well as indicators like Time to Collision and Post Encroachment Time for every road user.

The beauty of video-based analysis is that it allows us to study near-miss conflicts on a 100% sample size. These close interactions happen far more frequently than actual crashes but tell us just as much about safety risks.

A Partnership Built on Expertise

SWOV appointed Transoft Solutions as their selected provider following a formal public procurement process conducted in accordance with Dutch tendering regulations. This project is a perfect fit with Transoft’s capabilities in traffic video analytics, road safety analysis, and transportation data services. It’s the kind of work that combines technical sophistication with real-world impact, which is exactly what our team is passionate about.

« We are honored to have been working with SWOV since 2020 on annually increasing scopes. This tender assignment and SWOV’s repeated trust in our technology is a testament to Transoft’s unique technical capabilities and road safety expertise. We’re thrilled to partner with SWOV on this critical road safety research project » said David Homola, Business Development Manager at Transoft Solutions. « This project will provide valuable evidence-based insights that can inform infrastructure design decisions to better protect vulnerable road users throughout the Netherlands and beyond. »

Looking Ahead

The insights from this study will help shape how roundabouts are designed and improved across the Netherlands. When road authorities understand exactly which design features enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians, they can make smarter infrastructure investments.

Transoft is proud to contribute our technology and expertise to research that will ultimately save lives, facilitate sustainable, active transport and make Dutch roads safer for everyone.
