Creating Engaging Streetscape Scenes with KeySCAPE: A Webinar Recap

KeySCAPE

In a recent webinar, Transoft Solutions hosted an insightful session titled “How to Create Streetscape Scenes,” featuring our Product Specialist, Martin Bacon. This event focused on utilising KeySCAPE and other tools to develop streetscape scenes, incorporating both 2D and 3D visualisations. For those who couldn’t attend, here’s a detailed recap of the webinar’s highlights.

Introduction to Streetscape Design

Martin began by outlining the fundamental principles of streetscape design. He emphasised the importance of creating functional and accessible urban spaces that cater to various users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The goal is to balance aesthetic appeal with practicality, ensuring the streetscape enhances the overall urban environment.

Strategic Planning with KeyOSC Mapper

The session kicked off with a deep dive into the strategic planning capabilities of KeyOSC Mapper. Martin demonstrated how this powerful tool, when connected to the OS Data Hub, can integrate with KeySCAPE to create detailed 2D and conceptual 3D urban plans. He showed how to map building heights and other critical features, providing a solid foundation for more detailed design work.

Concept and Mass Modelling

Martin showcased the process of concept and mass modelling using KeyOSC Mapper and KeySCAPE. He highlighted three key features:

  • Generating Simple 3D Buildings: This feature allows users to generate basic 3D content from building height data provided from Ordnance Survey, to create a quick visual representation of the urban landscape.
  • Draping Features on a Surface: When working in Autodesk Civil, KeyOSC Mapper allows you to drape features over the civil surface, which helps laying out roads, pathways, and other elements accurately on the terrain, providing a more realistic depiction of the area of interest.
  • Locating 3D Blocks on Surfaces: Martin discussed how was possible to place 3D objects like trees, street furniture, and other elements within the streetscape, enhancing the model’s realism.

Detailed Streetscape Design

Martin then transitioned to the detailed design phase, focusing on creating detailed streetscape scenes. He explained how to use KeySCAPE to design both 2D elevations and 3D blocks, providing a dual perspective that aids in planning and visualisation.

Prototype Dynamic Street Design

One of the webinar’s purposes was to gain customer feedback of a street design prototype. Martin illustrated how dynamic elements can be used to create flexible and interactive streetscape models, allowing for easy modifications and updates as project requirements evolve. There was a positive response from the delegates to develop this feature further.

Creating engaging and functional streetscape scenes is essential for modern urban design. With tools like KeyOSC Mapper and KeySCAPE, urban planners and designers can develop comprehensive 2D plan and elevation views or conceptual 3D models that cater to various needs and enhance the urban environment.
