Replacing Crash-Prone Intersections with Modern Roundabouts

Roundabouts are increasingly being designed and built in North America, contributing to safer road networks.

When it comes to safety assessment of an intersection, potential safety countermeasures are initially developed based on applicable standards. This webinar will review safety evaluation of a crash prone intersection and a modern roundabout as a potential countermeasure, and will cover the following:

  • Basic concepts of the HSM 6-Step Roadway Safety Management Process, highlighting Network
  • Screening, Diagnosis and Countermeasure Selection
  • Review an accident prone intersection based on substantive (data driven) evidence
  • Model the intersection and the existing geometrics with NEXUS Intersections
  • Analyze the intersection to observe potential conflict points
  • Replace the intersection with a roundabout using TORUS 6.0 as a potential safety countermeasure
  • Conduct performance and safety checks including fastest path speeds, truck movement and sight line(s)
  • Review potential implementation challenges compared to the intersection such as right of way limitations
